The Roman Catholic Church has experienced a large shift in its cultural role throughout the centuries, from being a minority group in the face of the Roman Empire, to being a powerhouse during the Renaissance time period. What defines these eras of early Christian existence? And what aspects of their culture can we embrace today?
From the time of Christ’s death and Resurrection, the Roman Catholic Church has moved through three general periods:
Martyrs/Early Church: 30 to 324 CE
Mendicants: 1000-1400 CE
Masterpieces/Renaissance: 1400-1600 CE
Each of these time periods can be described through the artifacts were left behind from it. Through an analysis of artifacts from each time period, characteristics of each time period will be defined, as well as connections to modern day Christianity.
This analysis is done for the class Martyrs, Mendicants, and Masterpieces, taught by Dr. Amanda Osheim at Loras College,
